4 Ways Meal Planning Will Change your Life

When we are hungry, we are more likely to grab the first thing we see. When we have a plan in place we can make more nourishing and nutrient dense choices leaving us with more energy and feeling our best!

4 reasons why I love meal planning, and why you will love it too!

  1. Save money -

Since our family started meal planning we have saved over $100 dollars a month on our grocery bill! This doesn’t mean we have cut out all treats and fun foods to reach this goal (I love splurging at the heath food store,) we have just been more intentional with the foods we do buy making sure we buy the right amount and right ingredients for the recipes we need.

  2. Save time -

We found ourselves running to the grocery store multiple times a week to pick up a few ingredients. Although it’s just across the street, it took time away from other things we like to do like going on family walks. By having a plan in place we spent less time finding a recipe we could make with what we had and less time worrying about what was going to be for dinner the night of! Meal planning also helped us eat more leftovers for a quick easy lunch the next day!

  3. Reduce food waste -

It has been shown that Canadian households are wasting more food now than before the COVID-19 pandemic began, often overbuying groceries by around $2000 per year. WOW! According to a Dalhousie University survey, households reported tossing an average of 13.5% more food that they did before the pandemic. As a result, this overbuying could lead to an additional 20 -24 million kgs of organic waste per month across households. “Domestic food waste is the bill you will never receive but you have to pay for,” said food distribution and policy professor Sylvain Charlebois. I find it very satisfying to use up the food in our fridge by the end of the week. If there is produce left from the previous week we find ways to incorporate it into our meals the next week so it doesn’t go to waste.

  4. Manage stress levels -

We are all busy! The last thing you want to do when it get’s closer to dinner is decide what you are going to make…then realize you don’t have all of the ingredients and end up ordering in pizza! This can add up quickly. On top of that, you are probably drained from making enough decisions in the day.. you know decision fatigue? When you plan your meals ahead of time you leave more space for the things you NEED to get done in the day, reduce your stress and are able to spend more time being present with your family, friends or roommates because your decision is already made for you.
